Hayes and Partners obtained planning consent for the conversion of the barns at Cloud Wood End and a new-build farmhouse with a glazed link connecting the two buildings.
The original farmhouse was in a poor state of repair and the relocation of the new house next to the barns creates a thermally efficient multigenerational family home. The project uses reclaimed materials from the site and integrates solar panels and a ground source heat pump.
The new house has been built as a replica of the original; stones from the original house were numbered during demolition and reassembled in the new location. The modern open plan element to the rear uses the same materials and proportions as on the original building but with modern detailing, such as the smooth-faced ashlar stonework with course sizes that match those one the front.
There are a mix of old and new outbuildings on the site built with a palette of materials and styles in keeping with a range of vernacular buildings found on a farmyard.
As well as planning drawings, Hayes and Partners were appointed to provide working drawings for construction and to demonstrate Building Regulations compliance and have administered the construction contract.
